In last few decades we are used to that Onkyo surprise us with some new stuff especially in last few years. They are going over the top with some experimenting. We were really satisfied with their new line of receivers like Onkyo TX-NR515 and TX-NR616 but what can we expect with flagship model like the mighty Onkyo TX-NR 818 a 7.2 channel beast that gives 135W per channel, has full networking and bunch of HDMI’s? Let’s see…
Design and connectivity
From the start we see that Onkyo TX-NR818 is one big and robust model that defines its price range. It really looks jaw dropping and huge. The seriousness of design and looks is very serious and professional we really can’t find the words to describe our thoughts here. On the front panel from the left side we can see standard Onkyo power button and bellow it there is Pure Audio button for stereo listening. In the center there is Alpha Numeric display that is showing you needful info about what are you currently listening and on how many speakers etc.. On the right side there is Volume knob. You thought that is all??? NO there is an aluminium plate bellow input selectors in the middle where are that many buttons that you almost don’t have need for remote, and of course with some front connectors like front HDMI and USB input, plus phones, set-up mic etc…We can only say WOW in this case let us hear anyone say Onkyo TX NR818 is missing something.
From the looks on the front panel we kinda expected to lost ourselves with connections from the rear side of this beautiful device but that didn’t happen. There is everything you need from one device this type and in this price range but from its killer and monstrous looks we expected more. Ok from the front panel there are 7 HDMI inputs and 2 outputs. Networking, back USB and RS 232 are also there. 11 speakers outputs for many combinations of Home Theater modes including separate speakers for 2nd zone. There are also digital coaxial and optical inputs together in combination with all stereo inputs you can handle together with composite and video inputs. For the end last but not least there are 2 sub woofer outputs and VGA input too:) what else do you need Onkyo asks?
- TX-NR818 has 8 HDMI inputs and 2 outputs that are supporting 3D Video and Audio Return Channel
- TX-NR818 is THX Select 2 Plus Certified
- Network functions like Internet Radio and streaming music from home network
- Dual Core Video Engine, Marvell Qdeo Processing
- Onkyo’s Instaprevue technology for picture in picture
- Remote App for your smart phone
Hybrid Standby for reducing power consumption
Like we said when we saw Onkyo TX-NR 818 we were shocked by its appearance. But on the test we were shocked even more. Everything worked right out of the box like a charm without any problems. Internet Radio and music streaming sound was astounding thanks to Burr Brown DAC Onkyo has inside. Especially FLAC files sound was amazingly warm, transparent and neutral. Then we decided that Onkyo TX NR818 is one device with great options for many different situations. It can be used from classic Home Theater to second system for audiophiles that don’t want to burn their tubes on expensive amplifiers. In Home Theater performance it is also brilliant device. We tested it with blu ray version of Avengers and because of its brilliant processing we can say that we didn’t see this movie until now. Good job Onkyo on this one. Sound was also dynamic, with high punch and at the same time crystal clear a calm. the only thing Onkyo must update or something is control app cause it is confusing and unresponsive sometimes.
Onkyo TX-NR 818 is firmly built Audio Video receiver with possibilities and features only some devices can dream to have. With its brilliant picture processing its a winner at this moment in our opinion and at the same time it has a sound that is worth much more for one Audio Video receiver. If you have enough money and you want to spend it on a really great device let us tell you Onkyo TX-NR 818 is one hell of a choice!
